Article Icon What a Gift!

by Troy 7. January 2016 15:06

For the last three years I've been making paper ornaments and selling them for $1.  Each dollar I gather sends a child to a 10-day Bible Club in India.  Of course we want them to know Jesus and His love for them (most have never heard the name Jesus) but the Bible Club teaches so much more!  Many children work in India and the conditions are unbelievably grim... one job they have is to gather dung (whatever kind does not really matter) to make fuel patties out of them to sell to street vendors for their cook stoves.  If a child has never been taught to wash their hands... they make the dung patty, sell it to the vendor and then go home and help prepare a family meal... all without washing their hands.  Many children in India have never seen a bar of soap!  It's a very daunting fact that India loses (to death) about 350,000 children under the age of 15 every 5 weeks.  I know... it's really hard to believe.  But it gives me great comfort to know that they children River sends to Bible Club (and I've had lots of help from people like you) learn how to live life better as they learn Who it is that gives them Life... and Life more abundant!  River sent 7022 chilren to Bible Club this Christmas 2015!  One day... you will be walking in Heaven and someone will come up to you... and say, "Thank you for sending me to Bible Club... that's why I'm here!"

Article Icon Can $1 Change Your Life?

by Troy 17. January 2013 12:28

It started as an idea... a way to get youth excited about helping someone out at Christmas time without costing them an arm and leg.  So i made some paper-board ornaments for $1 that kids could purchase to send a child to Bible Club in India.  As an added incentive I told the youth that I would match "dollar for dollar" anything they raised.  Those youth always come through with a little challenge... they raised a little over $250!  I told my Tuesady morning men's group, Men's Life, about the ornaments and they decided they would match as well!  So we had a little over $750 to put toward Children's Bible Club in India.  When I told my contact for Mission India about this little project he said, "Hey!  I got matching funds for that!"  It started as an idea... it has "ripple-effected" into nearly 1600 children going to Bible Club.  To learn more about all the Bible Club does in India... click HERE.

Can $1 change your life... think about it.

To all of you who support River of the Spirit - you had a helping hand in this!  We thank you with our whole hearts!

Article Icon Getting over jet-lag!

by Troy 10. February 2012 09:46

We were very blessed to have encountered India... however, it's good to not have to keep your mouth shut while you shower, drink water from the tap and eat ice!!!  We will try to put up a folder that has India pics and vids in it for those that did not get a chance to follow the blog.

Thank you so much for following and praying for us!

Article Icon Andy Doesn't Play Fair

by Troy 2. February 2012 10:42

Just a fun video - but what is happening is really not that funny when you realize people really believe that this water will cleanse their sins. Andy made an impressionable comment... "They come to wash in the waters from the mountains of the Himalayas but know not the God Who made the Himalayas."

Article Icon Friends Forever

by Troy 2. February 2012 09:51

It is difficult to describe what I saw near the end of our trip... but let me try. A small creek that ran through a small community... dirty - yes... poverty - yes... laughter - Indeed! The literacy class that we send children and adults to is presented in this video. Notice there is no top to this structure - and 30 participants are in each class (cough cough). I'll explain a few other pictures at the bottom of the post.

#1 Walking through the neighborhood where the literacy class is held.
#2 A little boy I met in the neighborhood as he walked home from school.
#3 The 30 participants (hummm... remember they still are learning math) met us with great joy!
#4 Those on the opposite roof may be of a higher cast in the hindu culture... thus, they are not happy about lower cast learning to read and write.
#5 The children are our friends forever - we prayed for them and they followed us to our car.

Article Icon The Ganges River - Bury your dead

by Troy 1. February 2012 09:47

The Ganges River is an ancient and religious site that India uses to cleanse their sins or bury their dead... A ledger will be placed at the bottom of the pictures to explain the pictures.

#1 - India men come to wash their sins away in the river.

#2 - A sea of people on one side of the Ganges - and serenity on the other.

#3 - The large building for creamating the dead - no one uses it - they do it the old fashion way... beside the river.

#4 - A far away shot of a burning ritual.

#5 - The picture of a holy man will cost you.

#6 - The India bus picking up children for school

Article Icon Crossing the Street in Varanasi - A dangerous proposition

by Troy 31. January 2012 09:43

Crossing the street in Varanasi is a dangerous task... whatever you do... don't stop!

Up until this evening... we had always had the safety of a large bus to guard us from the various forms of transportation on the roads. The roads have no defined lines... so you just kinda (and I use "kinda" very loosely) stay to the left. The paths taken by motor cycles (the most prominent of transportation in India), bikes and cars is no better than the way thousands of ants emerge from an ant bed headed for whatever destination they have. So we crossed the street in Varanasi - the only rule... don't stop for any reason... just keep going! Other street life on the India Streets...

Article Icon Children's Bible Club

by Troy 30. January 2012 19:13

Children's Bible Club in Hyderabad!!

What a joy it was to share time with one of the thousands of Children's Bible Clubs in India. The children sang, recited scriptures (long ones and lots of them!) and then gave testimony of their lives. The joy that filled that small area (they use any space they can find) was beyond my comprehension because of the poverty I saw around me. The faith that was evident in their lives astonished me! Adult neighbors gathered around the children just to watch. We asked one parent that was watching why she let her child come to the Bible Club... she said, (with a translator of course) "They help my daughter with her home work!" It's a pretty good plan!

We hit the ground running on Sunday morning with worship... we split up and went to different sites to participate in their services. It was the most humbling experience I have had.
